    German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday called for a settlement of the conflict with North Korea through the application of the experience of the Iranian nuclear deal, stressing that the solution should be. 

    "I think the nuclear agreement with Iran could be a model for resolving the conflict with North Korea," Merkel said in a press statement. " Europe, especially Germany,must be ready to make a very effective contribution."

    Merkel said that "Germany will receive its weight once it is asked to participate in talks aimed at ending North Korea's program to develop nuclear weapons and missiles," noting that "last week conducted telephone conversations with leaders of France, the United States, China, South Korea and Japan on the crisis with Korea North ". 

    The German Chancellor stressed that "solving the problem of North Korea's threats must be diplomatic because a new arms race in the region is not in the interest of anyone." 

    Merkel's comments come ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on Monday to discuss a US draft resolution to impose tougher sanctions on Pyongyang. 

    The five permanent members of the Security Council and Germany had concluded in 2015 a historic agreement with Iran to reduce the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for the easing of sanctions.

    North Korea has carried out a number of missile and nuclear tests over the past few years, leading to UN Security Council sanctions, but these have not prevented Pyongyang from continuing its tests. 

    Last week, it conducted what it said was a test of a hydrogen bomb, sparking a furious reaction.[/size]
