Russia and North Korea will launch diplomatic consultations on Monday in Moscow to ease tension on the Korean peninsula, a foreign ministry source said.
"Consultations on issues of the Korean settlement will begin on September 29 in Moscow with the participation of Russia's special envoy Oleg Burmestrov," the source told Interfax news agency on Tuesday.
The statement came after a source from the North Korean embassy in Russia told the same agency earlier in the day that a delegation of diplomats from North Korea, headed by North Korea's head of the ministry, Cui Sun Hei, will arrive in Moscow Tuesday Of Burmesterov.
Russian Foreign Ministry chief Mikhail Ulyanov said the Russian side was working openly with North Korea to resolve the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
"Such action is being carried out through our channels, which is not public for obvious reasons, and at the very least we seek to push the situation forward," Ulyanov told a news conference in Moscow in response to a question on whether Russia was in negotiations with North Korea over the issue. Towards an acceptable direction ".
It is worth noting that Russia has consistently called for the need to resolve the tension on the Korean Peninsula through diplomatic means, criticizing the recent war rhetoric of North Korea on the one hand and the United States and its allies on the other.
At the same time, the Russian authorities condemn nuclear tests and ballistic missile tests carried out by North Korea, as well as the provocative military actions that the United States continues to take on the territory of the Korean peninsula.
In an initiative aimed at easing tensions and avoiding resorting to any military action, Russia, in cooperation with China, previously offered a joint plan to resolve the issue, proposing "North Korea to declare, by voluntary political decision, Ballistic missiles, "while calling for" the United States and South Korea to refrain from carrying out large-scale joint military exercises "in South Korea.
At the same time, the Russian-Chinese plan includes "the parties to the conflict are engaged in negotiations and set out common principles for their relations, including non-use of force, abandonment of hostilities, peaceful coexistence and determination to make efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula with a view to a comprehensive settlement of all issues , Including nuclear. "
The Russian-Chinese plan also stipulates that all parties must "put forward, within the framework of the negotiations, and in a manner acceptable to all of them, the formation of a mechanism for the establishment of peace and security in North-East Asia, so as to achieve normalization of relations among the countries of the region."
