US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has asked Saudi Arabia to ease its blockade of Yemen, days before the Riyadh-led alliance said it would allow aid through the port of Hodeidah and reopen Sanaa airport to UN planes, sources told Reuters.
A source familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named, said Tillerson had asked to ease the blockade on Yemen by telephone with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for about 45 minutes earlier this week.
He confirmed R. C. Hammond, a senior adviser to Tillerson, contacted Mr Bin Salman and said Tillerson had "informed the Saudis of this request several times in the past months."
"To the best of my knowledge, the administration is angry," US senator Todd Young said of the situation in Yemen. There are varying degrees of anger among different members of the administration. "
Young, a Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, spoke before the Saudi-led coalition's announcement on Wednesday.
According to the sources, Tillerson's request to the crown prince was one of several attempts this month to persuade Riyadh to soften its foreign policy.
A senior Saudi official told Reuters that even before Tillerson spoke to Bin Salman recently, senior White House officials told the Saudi ambassador in Washington, Khalid bin Salman, the importance of taking the two steps.
"They stressed the importance of addressing the humanitarian situation in Yemen and we said that we understand this and that the closures are temporary while we are working on a comprehensive plan for the entry of aid," the official said.
The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen announced on Wednesday that the port of Hodeidah and Sanaa airport could be reopened to humanitarian aid.
