The New York Times claimed Tuesday that there was a long-term Saudi plan to confront Lebanon's Hezbollah.

The newspaper claimed that "Saudi Arabia seeks to arm militias and mercenaries in the Palestinian camps to confront Hezbollah, in order to increase Saudi influence in exchange for striking Iranian influence in Lebanon," and claimed that Lebanese and Western officials expressed concern about destabilizing refugee camps and the formation of militias in or outside, A Saudi official said Saudi Arabia had never discussed such a thing.

"There are fears in Beirut that Saudi Arabia and its Lebanese allies will try to form anti-Hezbollah militias in the camps or anywhere else," the New York Times quoted Lebanese officials and several Western diplomats as saying. "Because of deep concern, Lebanese officials to overcome what they fear of a long-term plan by Saudi Arabia to destabilize the camps of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. "
