[ltr]The Library of Congress decided to stop archiving all public tweets from December 31, to collect only selected entries, such as those on important events or social and political developments.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Library of Congress began collecting Twitter public tweets in 2010 and has received back-to-back tweets since 2006.[/ltr]
[ltr]In a report published this month, the Library said that the decision to stop archiving was made for several reasons, notably the high volume of tweets and the increase in the number of Twitter characters to 280 characters, in addition to containing many publications on images and videos, which makes the collection of these tweets in the library that rely on Written texts only, is of little value.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Future generations will learn a lot about this rich period in our history, the flow of information and the social and political forces that help define the characteristics of the present generation," the library said, adding that "it will be an important legacy for the future."[/ltr]
