    Information / follow-up ...
A total of 955 miners who were trapped underground in South Africa after an electrical failure started out last night.
James Wilstead, a spokesman for the Seppany Gold Company, who operates the mine, told AFP that "electricity was restored, allowing rescue operations to take off."
He added that "the first elevator took out a first batch of workers," including hundreds of people.
Rescue operations are scheduled to continue for an additional hour so that all the workers who have been stranded since Wednesday evening can be removed from more than 1,000 workers, 65 of whom have been discharged during the day.
The Seppany-Stillwater Mining Company reported that a major electrical fault caused elevators to stop and night crews could not get to the surface in the gold mine, 290 km southwest of Johannesburg, stressing that the workers were not in danger and were able to provide them with food And water
