    GEF funded project "FAW" for the advancement of tuna fisheries (PFP)

    Today at 1:17 pm

    BAGHDAD (Independent) .. Approved CEO of the Global Environment Facility "GEF", expert Naoko Ishii, today on the financing of a project coordinated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture "FAO" for the advancement of the status of Tuna and sustainability in all parts of the world, by reducing illegal fishing and support marine ecosystems and species marine related.

    A statement from (FAO) received (Independent) today adopted the Global Environment Facility as an international body fall under its banner 183 countries to address global environmental issues and support sustainable development, financing of the implementation phase of the project multiple partnerships, which are coordinated by the organization "FAW" in order to better manage fisheries tuna in the high seas and the preservation of biodiversity of marine ecosystems and related species. The project would reduce illegal catches of adult tuna varieties of high-value diversity and, as a kind consumed globally on a large scale.

    And Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment Facility, that "This decision paves the way for action on a global scale, in order to face all threats, economic and environmental hanging over one of the most important commercial fish species in the world"; adding, "I am pleased that we are able to bring together partners from the public and private sectors in Under this project, to work on a sufficient scale to reverse the negative trends that threaten the global tuna fisheries, and with the ocean environment that support it. "

    So far, the possible employment of U.S. $ 30 million of grants provided by the Global Environment Facility to mobilize more than $ 150 million in co-financing to support this project, which is part of a broader initiative to stakeholders multi, in order to work to ensure that harvested the fish resources precious in a sustainable manner.

    And builds a global project to save the tuna, said "the draft fisheries management and biodiversity conservation," scheduled to run from 2013 to 2018 to complete the activities of five organizations on the management of regional fisheries (t-RFMOs) - combines the broad interests of stakeholders - in order to work on three main fronts specific, are:

    · Strengthen fisheries management more sustainable and higher efficiency, and achieve better understand a broader fishing practices;

    · Reduce illegal fishing and unreported "IUU", through enhanced monitoring and escalation of surveillance and supervision;

    · Reduce the ecological damage as a result of fishing, including catch and excessive use of non-target marine species.

    The project specifically aims to stimulate action among the five organizations to manage fisheries regional (t-RFMOs) and other partners, and to contribute to the restoration of lost wealth associated with this type of fish values.

    In the assessment of expert Arne ماثيسن, Assistant Director-General of the fisheries sector to the Organization "FAO", the "fisheries on the high seas to support food security and livelihoods of millions all over the world, and through collective action at all levels and the broad cooperation to improve the use of resources This project will help rare - and Oceans Initiative broader joint (CO) - a move the world away from the direction of 'rush to fish' and towards the adoption of an ecosystem-oriented approach ... as crucial to ensure the future well-being and productivity of these marine ecosystems very vital. " He added that "early successes create incentives for donors and agencies, for further investment in these forms of stimulus projects."

    The Wildlife Fund U.S. "WWF-US" one of the key players involved with the organization "FAW" in the implementation of this project, in addition to the five organizations for regional fisheries management (t-RFMOs), and the Agency for Fisheries Pacific Islands (FFA), and the parties Agreement Nauru (PNA), and the Secretariat of communities Pacific (SPC), and the U.S. Agency National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Convention for the Safeguarding of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), and BirdLife International "BLI", and the Foundation sustainable seafood International (ISSF), The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The private sector of the tuna industry, including members of a series of fish harvesting and processing industries, is also a key partner for its full support for this initiative.

    Improvements to stimulate Tuna

    The fish and tuna-like species have higher value of fishery resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction "ABNJ". While swarms of highly migratory tuna about 20 percent of the value of all marine fisheries, exceed the value of the catch of the most important types of tuna alone $ 10 billion annually.

    Up the amount of the global catch of tuna to about 5.4 million tons per year, by more than 85 countries phishing varieties of this kind in commercial quantities. The upper limit fishing levels in the Pacific Ocean, followed by the Atlantic and Indian المحيطان.

    The organization estimates "FAW" to that about one third of the total seven major varieties of tuna in the world is located under penalty of overexploitation. This trend is attributed to the continued strong demand for consumer products such as "sashimi", canned tuna, along with excessive capacity of modern fishing fleets. Likely that the situation will continue to deteriorate tuna stocks that did not take effective measures to improve the management of their fisheries.

    An extensive network

    In addition to the project save tuna in the high seas, including other programs under way more use Top sustainability of living resources and ecosystems in the deep sea; and strengthen the global capacity for the management of tuna and tuna-like species areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction "ABNJ", and the "partnerships ocean," which will work on the development of business plans in order to encourage investment in the long-term management and sustainable fisheries.

    Key partners include in these programs, the organization "FAW", the World Bank, and the United Nations Environment "UNEP", and Conservation International "CI", and the International Union for Conservation of Nature "IUCN", and the Wildlife Fund U.S. "WWF-US", and the Forum Ocean World "GOF".
