US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Friday that his country recognized Turkey's legitimate right to secure its borders, but called on Ankara to show restraint in its operation in the Afrin region of Syria and avoid steps that would escalate tensions.
Tillerson told a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mouloud Chaochoglu in Ankara that Washington had great concerns about local staff in its diplomatic mission in Turkey, calling on Ankara to release a US priest and other Americans held there.
