The Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said on Monday that Baghdad and Arbil are "making great strides" in the understandings on ending the suspension of international flights at airports in the region, reducing the issue of extending the ban on international flights from airports in the region.
The director of Erbil International Airport, announced on Monday that Baghdad extended the ban on international flights to airports in the region until next May.
However, the spokesman of the Office Saad al-Hadithi told Ashqaf News, "The time limits are routine procedures and once the understandings and agreements are finalized, the suspension is terminated.
" He added, "There has been substantial progress in the first two aspects related to the agreement on the supervision of the Federal Border Ports Authority Sulaymaniyah and Erbil airports, as well as progress in the management of passports, residence and visas. "
Al-Hadithi said, "We have another side related to the security management of these two airports and there are ongoing meetings to resolve this aspect and in its end the suspension ends by the federal government."
The Iraqi government has decided to stop all international flights to and from the airports of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah on September 29 last, four days after the province conducted a referendum on his independence from Iraq.
The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi, then asked the Government of Kurdistan of Iraq to hand over Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports, otherwise it will order the suspension of all direct international flights to and from Kurdistan Iraq.
The decision comes despite Abadi's assertion that the provincial government has agreed to Baghdad's airport conditions.
