    [ltr]White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Hicks, the White House communications director, would step down.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Sanders told reporters that the date of Hicks' departure was not yet clear. But she said her resignation was not tied to her testimony before a congressional committee on Tuesday over an inquiry into Russian intervention in the 2016 US election.[/ltr]
    [ltr]She is expected to leave office within a few weeks.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Hicks, 29, found herself trapped amid the controversy surrounding former White House secretary of staff Rob Porter, who was dating him. Hicks has sought to defend him in the face of accusations of abuse of his two previous wives. Porter was eventually forced to resign.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Hicks was among the first to be hired by Trump when he began his presidential campaign and was among his closest advisers.[/ltr]
