[rtl]The International Institute for Peace Research (SIPRI) revealed that Iraq's military spending has increased by 22 percent, pointing out that defense spending has increased significantly in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia in particular.[/rtl]
[rtl]Military expenditure in the Middle East rose 6.2 percent in 2017, while Saudi spending grew by 9.2 percent in the same year, following a drop in 2016 to $ 69.4 billion, making Saudi Arabia cut the world's third place, the institute said in a report.[/rtl]
[rtl]According to the Institute, among the countries that recorded the largest increases in military spending Iran (19%) and Iraq (22%).[/rtl]
[rtl]Russia's military spending amounted to 66.3 billion dollars in 2017, 20 percent less than in 2016, the institute said, the first decline since 1998.[/rtl]
[rtl]According to the Stockholm Institute, "Military modernization remains a priority for Russia, but the military budget has been constrained by the economic problems that the country has suffered since 2014."[/rtl]
[rtl]On the other hand, military spending rose 12% in the Central European countries and 1.7% in the West on the back of fears of the alleged Russian threat and commitment to increase the defense expenditure it has made on its membership in NATO.[/rtl]
[rtl]The total military spending of the 29 NATO countries was $ 900 billion in 2017, representing 52% of global arms spending.[/rtl]
[rtl]The Stockholm Institute pointed out that global military spending witnessed a new rise last year after it stood between 2012 and 2016, to reach 2% of the world gross domestic product ( GDP ) or $ 230 per person.[/rtl]
[rtl]As usual, the United States topped the world with $ 610 billion in 2017, with experts predicting that its spending will rise substantially next year to boost the number of military personnel and modernize its conventional and nuclear arsenal.[/rtl]
[rtl]China recorded the world's largest spending increase in 2017, at $ 12 billion, leaving it second in terms of its total annual spending of $ 228 billion. Ending / 25[/rtl]
