The US House of Representatives did not support the amendment of the commercial budget for the military budget of 2019, which will limit funding for the project to develop new low-power nuclear warheads.
The source explained that the rejected amendment was supposed to significantly reduce the funding of a program to develop low-power warhead "W76-2", designed for the Trident II marine ballistic missiles.
This amendment was supported only by 188 out of 435 members of the House of Representatives, while 226 deputies voted against it.
Representatives of the Republican Party have made clear that this program should be one way to deter Russia.
Former officers of the security services and Pentagon committees had previously sent a letter to Congress calling for the abandonment of funding for a new nuclear warhead development program and warned that developing a tactical nuclear weapons program would "open the door to a nuclear disaster."
The US President Donald Trump was boasting at his account in Twitter in August that the first order issued after his presidency was to update and renew the US nuclear arsenal, stressing that his country will remain the largest nuclear power in the world.[/ltr]
