Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Zhaoshoglu has said his country is in contact with Iran over a possible military operation against PKK militants in the northern region of Qandil, close to the Iranian border.
"We are in contact with Iran, the PKK is also a threat to them, and a cordon close to Iran's border, and we will strengthen cooperation with Iran," Zhaooshoglu said in a press statement.
The Turkish Defense Minister Noureddine Ganikli, announced on Tuesday that the army of his country will remain permanently in the Kurdistan region.
"Our operations inside the region are different this time," Turkish media quoted Janicelli as saying. "For the first time, the army is setting up military bases."
"The operations will continue until the Kandil mountains are cleared of terrorists," he said, adding that "the army will remain permanently in the Kurdistan region."
"Iran supports Turkish operations within the Kurdistan region," he said.
"Ankara has offered Iran joint operations in Qandil," he said. "The attack on Qandil has nothing to do with the early presidential elections on June 24, because the attack plan was put in place a year ago."
Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Shawishoglu said last Friday that "Turkish military operations against the PKK in northern Iraq have reached the area of Mount Qandil," the stronghold of the organization, which Ankara classifies as a terrorist group.
Oglu said his country was determined to end the party's presence in Mount Qandil.
For his part, Prime Minister Haider Abadi, on Tuesday, the absence of any agreement with the Turkish side on the military operations inside Iraqi territory, pointing out that the operations are their electoral objectives.
"We have a follow-up to the situation in the Qandil mountains. It is an old problem. It is a rugged mountain and throughout the ages it was very difficult to control. The Turkish escalation and the recent statements about the prosecution of the Workers Party in the Qandil Mountains are electoral statements we heard only in the media," he said. In this matter and any entry into Iraqi territory is a red line and an attack on Iraqi sovereignty. "
He stressed "the absence of any agreement with the Turkish side on the entry of Turkish troops and there is no coordination with the Turkish side, and statements on this is part of the Turkish election propaganda."
