The White House announced that Pyongyang has begun the process of returning the remains of US soldiers to the United States.

A US airliner flew to North Korea on Friday for the remains of US soldiers killed in the Korean war, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said, a process that was decided at a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Young-un.

Yonhap quoted a government source in Seoul as saying that the US military transport plane took off from Usan airbase in South Korea at 05:55 local time (20:55 GMT Thursday). The plane landed at Kalma airport in Wonsan city in eastern North Korea, the agency said.

On July 18, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the return of the remains of US soldiers killed during the Korean War should begin "in the next few weeks."

The terms and timing of Pyongyang's return to the remains of US soldiers killed during the Korean War (1950-1953) were discussed between two US and North Korean delegations on the inter-Korean border.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Naort said earlier that "this debate is continuing" and that "there is still a lot of work to be done at different levels."

More than 35,000 US troops were killed on the Korean Peninsula during the Korean War, which ended with a truce rather than a peace treaty. Of those, 7,700 are still missing, including 5,300 in North Korea, according to the Pentagon.

Washington and Pyongyang signed a previous agreement that restored between 1990 and 2005 the remains of 229 US soldiers, but the effect of the deal was frozen as relations between the two countries deteriorated.
