    The Israeli army has conducted a field test of a new combat method, combining infantry, tanks and combat engineering into a single combat unit, as part of a major military reform aimed at modernizing the Israeli army, the army said.
    This method was tested during an exercise simulating a war in the north against the Lebanese Hezbollah, during which the army also experimented with new technologies, including an anti-missile laser and more accurate artillery, according to the Times of Israel.
    The reconfigured unit was called Tsakha Gideon, a Hebrew acronym for the Brigade Combat Team for Gideon Gidon, the IDF's multi-year "Gideon" plan, a plan to modernize the army, which began in 2016.
    Details of this new organizational pattern were revealed earlier in the year and tested for the first time during a maneuver in the Golan Heights last week.
    During the training, soldiers from the Golani Brigade, tanks from the Seventh Armored Division and combat engineering forces from the 603th Battalion worked together under unified command. At present, these different types of units can cooperate with each other, but with greater autonomy.
    The proposed change aims to make ground forces in the military more effective and appropriate for the types of combat they may face, namely battles against armed groups, not against state armies, project officers told reporters on Monday.
    If we do not invest in technology, the battlefield will remain a realm of uncertainty, "said IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot during a training visit.
    The army knows that fighting non-state actors hiding among civilians is radically different from fighting regular armies in empty battlefields and requires more flexibility and precision from the Israeli army to avoid civilian casualties.
    In addition, new technologies, such as aircraft, require the army to develop technologies and systems to counter these threats.
    "We are aware of the changes, capabilities and developments of the enemy and we are monitoring them," said Col. Roman Goffman, commander of the 7th Armored Division. "In the face of these, we are keen to develop capabilities that always take us two steps ahead."
    "This is the first time we have seen a mixed team of combat brigades ... This is a battle in which tanks, infantry and combat engineering converge in a coordinated and synchronized fashion as our forces prepare to fight the enemy."
    Israel's military said on Sunday that the new organizational structure would include a brigade of ground forces consisting of at least six battalions, three infantry battalions, an armored combat battalion, a reconnaissance battalion and an administrative battalion.
