US official: We will not leave Syria
The United States will keep its presence in Syria as long as Iran is there, but the US role will not necessarily require soldiers, the US official said on Thursday.
Jeffrey made clear recent comments made by senior officials who seemed to suggest that troops would remain indefinitely for Iran.
If these troops remain indefinitely, this will radically change the mission that was allowed in Syria by former US President Barack Obama for the first time, and which set a goal of defeating the Dahesh organization, which is also Iran's enemy.
Jeffrey said US soldiers deployed on the ground "now have the task of perpetually defeating a sympathetic organization."
The United States has about 2,000 troops in Syria, mainly training and advising Kurdish and Syrian forces opposed to the Syrian regime.
"We will not leave as long as the Iranian forces are outside the Iranian border," US national security adviser John Bolton said at a news conference on the situation in Syria.
