US President Donald Trump said South Korea would not lift sanctions on Pyongyang without Washington's approval after South Korea's foreign minister declined to comment that her country was reconsidering some of its unilateral sanctions against Pyongyang.
Trump is encouraging US allies to continue to impose sanctions on North Korea until it renounces nuclear weapons as part of its administration's campaign to impose "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang.
"They will not do that without our consent," Trump said on Wednesday when asked about Seoul's thinking of lifting some sanctions on Pyongyang. They do nothing without our consent. "
South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa said in a parliamentary session on Wednesday that Seoul was considering easing sanctions on Pyongyang to encourage it to abandon its nuclear weapons.
South Korea imposed unilateral sanctions on the north in 2010 after an attack on a warship that killed 46 South Korean sailors. The sanctions banned most commercial and financial transactions between the two countries.
Kang later retreated from her remarks after drawing criticism from conservative lawmakers, saying North Korea should first apologize for the attack.
The Seoul Foreign Ministry has also officially denied reviewing the sanctions.
