Seoul has asked the United States to show "maximum flexibility" on its request for an exemption from South Korean companies to protect it from being affected by sanctions Washington will impose on Iran, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said.
The sanctions on Iran's oil exports are due to take effect on November 5 as part of a move by US President Donald Trump to force Iran to accept a more restrictive agreement to curb its nuclear and missile programs.
South Korea, the US ally, has already stopped importing oil from Iran, although it was one of the most Asian countries to buy Iranian oil. South Korean builders have also canceled energy contracts in Iran because of funding problems.
The ministry said in a statement that Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-ha requested the exemption by telephone with her US counterpart Mike Pompeo late on Monday.
"Minister Kang asked the US side to exercise maximum flexibility so that South Korea could obtain an exemption to reduce the damage to our companies," she said.
The statement said Pompeo said he was aware of Seoul's position and would continue consultations on the matter.
The waiver is the latest sign of strained relations between Seoul and Washington over a number of issues, notably sanctions aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.
South Korea and Japan are in talks with the United States in an effort to avoid the negative effects of re-imposing US sanctions on Iran. Washington gave the two countries an exemption during the previous round of sanctions, which ended in 2016, but is taking a tougher stance this time.
