Putin confirms Japan's readiness to return to the 1956 Declaration to discuss the peace treaty
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed Japan's readiness to return to a discussion of the peace treaty with Russia on the basis of the 1956 declaration.
Putin noted at the press conference that in 1956 the two sides signed a declaration that The Soviet Union is ready to hand over the two southern islands of the Kuril Islands to Japan after signing a peace treaty.
"During our meeting, the prime minister said Japan would be ready to go back to discussing the problem on the basis of the 1956 declaration, but of course this requires further serious and separate consideration," Putin said.
