The US Senate voted on Wednesday to discuss a resolution that could end US military support for the Saudi-led Arab alliance in the Yemen war.
Eleven members of President George Trump's Republican Party voted in favor of the 60-vote resolution, paving the way for a debate and vote on US involvement in a protracted conflict and one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
The vote is symbolic because the House of Representatives is not expected to rule this year, and Trump has threatened to use the veto.
Supporters of the resolution say the move sends an important message that legislators are dissatisfied with the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and are angry at the absence of a strong US response to the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers vowed to continue pressure after the new Congress took office in January for further crackdowns on Saudi Arabia, including legislation to impose human rights sanctions and stop arms sales to the kingdom.
"If you want to buy weapons, there are certain things that you have to accept," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham told a news conference.
"This person, the crown prince, is very poisonous and very repugnant and so flawed that I can not imagine myself dealing with Saudi Arabia unless there is a change there," said Graham, a close ally of Trump in the Senate.
The Republicans will have a slightly larger majority in the new Senate, but the Democrats will control the House of Representatives, which increases the likelihood of legislation sanctioning Saudi Arabia. Finished

The US Senate voted to end Saudi military support in its war against Yemen, Reuters reported on Thursday.
The Senate voted on Wednesday in favor of a resolution ending US military support for the Saudi-led Arab alliance in the Yemen war, the agency said.
It showed that 11 members of the Republican Party, including President Donald Trump, as well as the Democrats, voted in favor of the resolution to get 60 votes, paving the way for debate and vote on the United States involvement in a protracted conflict and one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
The vote is symbolic because the House of Representatives is not expected to rule this year, and Trump has threatened to use the veto.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers vowed to press ahead with the new Congress taking over in January to crack down on Saudi Arabia, including legislation to impose human rights sanctions and stop arms sales to the kingdom.
