The US Senate on Wednesday approved a bill to end US military support for the Saudi-led coalition in the war in Yemen and a rebuke to President Trump's policy with the kingdom.
Members voted 54 to 46 in the 100-member council for the law, which seeks to prevent the US military from engaging in any kind of conflict, including support for Saudi air strikes on targeting without congressional authorization.
The four-year-old Yemeni war, in which the Saudi-led coalition of the Houthi group allied with Iran, has killed tens of thousands and triggered what the United Nations calls the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, is on the verge of famine.
Proponents of the bill, including several members of Trump's Republican Party and Democrats, argued that US involvement in Yemen violated the constitution's stipulation that it was Congress, not the president, who would decide when the country goes to war.
"We are helping a foreign power to bomb its opponents in a war without doubt and indisputable," said Republican Sen. Mike Lee, who sponsored the bill.
The House of Representatives should pass the bill to be sent to the White House, which said on Wednesday Trump intended to veto it. This will be the first time that the US president has used this right since he took office two years ago
