General Civil Aviation Authority in the United Arab Emirates said on Sunday it would evaluate the development of the airport Damascus International to determine the possibility of the resumption of airline flights to the Syrian capital in the coming period. 

These developments come three days after the reopening of the UAE embassy in the Syrian capital. 

Etihad Airways and Emirates Airlines suspended flights to Damascus in 2012 with the start of the Syrian conflict.

"The General Authority for Civil Aviation is currently assessing the situation at Damascus International Airport through a specialized committee. The appropriate decision will be taken on the basis of the report of the committee," Saif al-Suwaidi, director general of the authority, told Al-Bayan newspaper. 

"The safety and safety of passengers is a top priority, so we will take all necessary measures including the safety of passengers and aircraft," Al Suwaidi said.
