The United Nations said less than five percent of refugees needing resettlement in Western countries have found new homes in the past year while the United States has reduced the number of displaced people allowed into their territory under President Donald Trump.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that the United States received 17,113 refugees resettled in 2018, the leaders of 27 countries that resettled 55,692 refugees in total under programs administered by the High Commissioner.
But UNHCR figures show that this is a decline compared to Washington's acceptance of 24,559 refugees resettled in 2017, the first year of Trump's job and 78,761 refugees in 2016, the last years of the administration of former President Barack Obama.
Canada came in second place last year after receiving 7,713 resettled refugees followed by Britain with the admission of 5702 refugees, then France, which accepted 5109 refugees and Sweden with some 4861 refugees.
"Despite the standard levels of forced displacement worldwide, only 4.7 percent of the world's resettlement needs are met by 2018," UNHCR spokeswoman Shehiba Manto told a news briefing.
