BEIJING (Reuters) - China and the United States on Sunday began imposing additional tariffs on each other's goods, the latest escalation in a bitter trade war despite signs that talks on the issue will resume this month.
The new round will take effect at 0401 GMT, with Beijing imposing a 5 percent tariff on US crude oil, the first time US oil has been targeted since the world's two largest economies began their trade war more than a year ago.
The administration of US President Donald Trump will begin to impose a 15 percent duty on Chinese imports worth more than $ 125 billion, including smartphones and Bluetooth headsets as well as many kinds of shoes.
In response, China has begun to impose duties on some US goods on a $ 75 billion target list. Beijing did not specify the value of goods to be charged higher as of Sunday.
Beijing has imposed a surcharge of 10 percent on 1,717 goods out of a total of 5,078 US products. Beijing will start collecting surcharges for the rest of the goods on September 15.
The Trump administration said last month it would increase existing and planned duties by 5 percent on Chinese imports by about $ 550 billion after Beijing announced its retaliatory duties on US goods.
The 15 percent fee is due to apply to cell phones, laptops, toys and clothes from December 15.
This comes as trade teams from China and the United States continue talks and will meet in September, but Trump said the increase in duties on Chinese goods due to start on Sunday would not be delayed.
For two years, the Trump administration has been pressing China to make sweeping changes in its policies on intellectual property protection, technology transfer to Chinese companies, industrial grants and market access.
China has always denied US accusations of unfair trade practices and vowed to respond to US punitive measures with similar measures.
The intensifying trade war between the two countries disrupted the trade of goods worth hundreds of billions of dollars, slowed the growth of the global economy and damaged markets.

began China and the United States on Sunday in the exchange of imposing additional customs duties on their goods, in the latest escalation in a raging trade war between the two countries.
As of today, China has begun to impose additional tariffs on some US goods as part of a targeted $ 75 billion list of goods as part of the US response.
Beijing imposed 5% and 10% surcharges on 1,717 goods, out of a total of 5,078 US products.
It also imposed 5 percent tariffs on US crude, the first precedent aimed at US oil since the world's two largest economies began their trade war more than a year ago.
For its part, the Trump administration will begin to impose a 15% duty on $ 125 billion worth of Chinese imports, including shoes, smartphones and Bluetooth headsets.
The Trump administration announced last month that it would increase current and future duties by 5% on Chinese imports by about $ 550 billion, after Beijing announced its retaliatory duties on US goods.
In the trade war between the two countries, Chinese state media stressed that "the United States must learn to act as a responsible and responsible global power and stop acting as a child bullying in a children's school."
The moves between the two countries come as trade teams from China and the United States continue talks and will meet in September, but Trump said higher tariffs on Chinese goods due to take effect on Sunday would not be delayed.
For two years, the Trump administration has been pressing China to make sweeping changes in its policies on intellectual property protection, technology transfer to Chinese companies, industrial grants and market access.
