"The improvised explosive device (IED) exploded as a team of Italian special forces passed through Iraq," the Italian Defense Ministry said in Pia.
The AFP news agency quoted a security source as saying that the attack occurred in the town of Makhmour south of Mosul in the province of Nineveh.
The ministry added that three of the five soldiers were seriously injured but their lives were not in danger, pointing out that one of them had amputated his leg.
The same source said that the team was training the Iraqi security forces, which is fighting the Islamic State terrorist organization.
