{International: Al Furat News} The United States secretly deported two officials of the Chinese embassy in Washington in September after heading to a sensitive military base in Virginia, according to the New York Times.
Citing people familiar with the incident, the newspaper said it appeared to be the first time in more than 30 years that the United States had expelled Chinese diplomats on suspicion of espionage.
She added that one of the diplomats is believed to be an intelligence officer with a cover.
The Times reported that the diplomats, accompanied by their two wives, went to a checkpoint at the entrance to a sensitive facility near Norfolk, Virginia, with elements of the Special Operations Forces.
When the guard noticed that the foreign visitors did not have permission to enter the facility, he ordered them to return their stairs.
However, the officials continued to go towards the base, evading two soldiers who were chasing them until they were forced to stop by fire trucks that blocked their path, according to the newspaper account.
The Chinese officials said they did not understand the guard's instructions and lost the way. But the American military was not convinced by the explanation.
The motives of the Chinese officials were not clear, but US officials expressed their belief that they were trying to test security measures at the base.
The officials were expelled "this fall," according to Times. Neither country announced the incident, and Beijing apparently did not respond in the course of reciprocity by expelling US diplomats in China.
Differences still exist between the United States and China on a number of issues, including industrial espionage, the presence of Beijing in the South China Sea, and the situations in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
After weeks of the incident at the Virginia base, the US State Department imposed restrictions on the activities of the Chinese diplomats, considering it a response to the Chinese rules that have been in place for years that restrict the movements of American diplomats in China.
China imposed similar restrictions on US diplomats in December. It was not clear if these restrictions were related to the Virginia incident
