ARBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Salah al-Ubaidi, a spokesman for the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, said that "very close" to Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi is behind the killings of demonstrators, especially in the first days of the start of the protests last October.
Many demonstrators were shot dead by snipers who were climbing on the roofs of tall buildings in Baghdad, which prompted the authorities to point the finger at "a third party." Political forces, demonstrators and local organizations have accused active militant factions of being involved in sniping.
Al-Obaidi said in an interview with official television that the killings that took place on the second, third and fourth of October near the Nervous Sentence Hospital and Muhammad al-Qasim Street were supervised by "very close" to the prime minister and he is "very close" to American political figures.
Al-Ubaidi declined to mention the name of the accused, adding that these accusations are based on "evidence".
Al-Ubaidi did not provide proof of his statements, which had previously been repeated by other Iraqi officials.
Al-Ubaidi said that there is a tendency by the authorities to close this file.
There was no immediate comment from the government on al-Ubaidi's charges.
Hundreds of protesters were killed and thousands more wounded by live ammunition and tear gas grenades in clashes with security forces on a daily basis for more than three months.
