The World Bank has agreed to reallocate $ 33.6 million as part of the ongoing Operations for Development project ($ 750 million) to support the Ministry of Health's efforts in preventing, detecting, and responding to the COVID-19 epidemic.
The bank said in a statement that this rapid and emergency response comes in two phases. The World Bank initially provided $ 7.8 million of available resources under the emergency operations project for development to help finance the supply of basic medical equipment and supplies and enhance the capacity of the ICU in Public hospitals to improve management of cases infected with COVID-19. In cooperation with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), artificial respirators, beds for intensive care units and portable X-ray machines in addition to ECGs will be delivered in Iraq within four to eight weeks.
In a later step, the World Bank also approved Iraq’s request to reallocate an additional $ 25.8 million in the framework of the project itself to provide additional quantities of medical equipment and supplies and support the training of front-line health workers in their use.
