Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
Activists say that the uncontrolled weapons and the presence of political money will end the hope for change in the upcoming elections. They indicated that the targeting of activists who intend to participate in the elections is part of a political process aimed at limiting political representation to traditional parties and that its influence will be transient to the independent.
Activist Hisham Al-Muzani said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the factors of reluctance and boycotting the upcoming elections are all available due to the chaos of weapons, political money, and the multiple psychological breakdowns of the masses."
"The targeting of activists who intend to participate in the elections is part of a long political series aimed at limiting political representation to traditional parties," Al-Muzani added, stressing that "its influence will not only be in the upcoming elections, but will extend to the next parliamentary sessions and become a political norm."
Al-Muzani points out that "the media machine of the political blocs is trying to give itself a November role, but it is not completely concerned with you." The activist points out that “settling scores between the parties has taken a bloody character in the recent period after the October demonstrations in 2019,” indicating that “fears of political assassinations are confirmed before and after the elections, and they are present, very influential and contained.”
Regarding the amendment of the election law, the activist said of the Baghdad governorate that "if the law was amended, it would be divided into certain sizes, especially for the parties, and the districts would be distributed harmoniously among them." “, As he put it.
In turn, activist Ali Al-Muallem said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the issue of leaving the elections takes more than one side, as it is between a reluctance to participate and calls for a boycott."
Al-Muallem, who is from Basra Governorate, expects that "a high percentage will go towards reluctance," noting that "a large percentage of society does not participate in the elections since 2006 to today."
"So far, no measures have been taken towards electoral security that precedes the election process, whether with uncontrolled weapons or provinces liberated from ISIS that are subject to military authority, in addition to the problems of the displaced," Muallem added.
The activist from Basra Governorate pointed out that “the election law suffers from many problems related to multiple constituencies and also it may serve the existing political blocs, especially the religious and tribal blocs, more than the previous law. Specified ”.
Al-Muallem believes that "the amendment of the election law consolidates the region and sectarianism in particular, because the candidate, whether independent or not, will have his electoral program according to the region."
It is noteworthy that the Diyala Organization for Human Rights revealed the results of the first Iraqi questionnaire regarding the early elections, indicating that the rate of reluctance to run for them ranges from 70-80%.
