    Baghdad - People
Three sources reported to "ABC News" that the US State Department has reduced the financial aid it used to provide to American diplomats working at the embassy in Baghdad, during the weeks of leave they got to relax away from stress, fatigue and the regular missile attacks.

According to "ABC News" sources, and "people" followed it, the embassy and the Middle East office in the Foreign Ministry urged the ministry to change this policy.
However, according to the sources, from now on, the additional wages will be deducted from the basic salaries, and diplomats who received what is known as "hardship wage" during their leave will also be required to pay thousands of dollars.
"ABC News" quoted an American official at the embassy compound in Baghdad as saying, "I feel as if we were stabbed in the back."
On the other hand, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told ABC News: "We will not discuss the details of employees' salaries, but we can confirm that our employees continue to receive their salaries and allowances in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."
Ministry regulations require diplomats to lose the extra "risk" wage any time they leave a precarious position, even if the reasons for leaving are temporary and related to comfort and recreation.
However, due to the risks in Iraq, diplomats there receive another financial incentive known as "hardship" salaries, which are money that the ministry is now reducing during the rest period because an order for workers to leave the embassy is still in effect.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ordered this in March 2020, calling on everyone except emergency personnel to leave Iraq.
But a small group of employees remained at the embassy when the Coronavirus began to spread. These workers were at risk of resuming rocket attacks in Baghdad's Green Zone until last November.
In a memo dated last February, this group learned that due to the departure order, embassy employees will lose their hardship wages when they leave the country to take leave, and this policy will be retroactive, which means that anyone who took leave last year may now have to return a portion of their salaries. According to three sources.
