The Minister of Immigration is part of a field visit to the IDP camps in Sulaymaniyah (Twitter)

Today, Friday, the Iraqi Minister of Immigration, Evan Fayek, announced that the ministry is about to end the file of displacement in Iraq, through steps it is taking to facilitate their return to their areas, while confirming that the file is not without political dimensions.
During a press conference held by the Minister in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan region, after visiting a number of displacement camps: “Our visit comes to solve the problems and remove the obstacles that stand against the return of the displaced to their areas,” stressing that “most of the displaced in these camps are from Salah al-Din Governorate. The problems they face, which prevent them from returning to their homes. "

And she promised to “address these problems when we visit Salah al-Din Governorate, and low-cost housing will be built on land allocated for them,” noting that “during the last period, 70 families have been returned to their areas, which is a voluntary and not forced return, and we will be with the displaced in the solution of all Problems. "
She emphasized that "the regional government was in agreement with us on the return of the displaced, who are guests of Kurdistan, and that the region still houses nearly 37 thousand families."
The governments of Baghdad and Erbil called for "work to end this file and return the displaced to their homes, but on a voluntary basis," and called on the international community to "play a role in this context."
And she stressed that "most of the camps that were previously closed, there were political interests in their survival, but it will not last. All the camps will be closed, but voluntarily."
For his part, a member of the Parliamentary Immigration Committee affirmed that "political parties are preventing the return of the displaced by accusing them of being linked to ISIS," indicating to "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that "most of the political parties that represent armed factions have controlled the areas of the displaced and their properties, and are still preventing any attempt to end This file ".
He added that "these moves prevented the ministry's efforts to end the file," stressing that "these parties achieve political and material gains through the displacement crisis, through the demographic change they want, and controlling the property and farms of the displaced."
He criticized “the position of the government and parliament regarding this,” stressing that “the file can only be ended through direct and forceful intervention by the government and parliament, especially since the militias impose their strong control over many areas of displacement.”
And Amnesty International had criticized, at the end of last year, the practices of IDPs who were taken out of the camps, especially those who are stigmatized as families of ISIS elements, calling on the Iraqi authorities and the Kurdistan Regional Government to address the issue of the continuous collective punishment of the displaced, as that An integral part of any national plan to close the camps, which are currently the only refuge for thousands of people.
Despite the efforts of the Iraqi authorities to resolve the issue of the displaced, tens of thousands of Iraqi families are still prevented from returning to their homes in several regions and towns, most notably Jurf al-Sakhr, Yathrib, al-Awja, al-Uweissat, Dera'a Tigris and other areas under the control of armed militias linked to Iran.
