Hebrew newspaper: There is a leadership crisis in Iraq
A report by the Hebrew newspaper Jerusalem Post confirmed, on Sunday, that there is a leadership crisis in Iraq, and the main reason for all this is the failure of political leaders to effectively manage the state .
The report stated that "Iraq failed as a democratic country to a large extent as it was proven that the invasion of Iraq was a wrong proposition, and Iraq has since witnessed a state of instability and chaos with little peace and quiet it offers to its citizens ."
He added, "The main reason for all this is the failure of political leaders to effectively manage the country, which celebrated that it will turn into a working democracy, but its performance was very poor, and the biggest quagmire is the support of successive American administrations for the Iraqi ruling elites ."
He continued, "Successive governments since 2003 have witnessed corruption, as Transparency International highlighted that, as Iraq was ranked 160 out of 180 countries that reported it." This means that Iraq was considered one of the worst countries ravaged by corruption, but in 2019 the National Institute for Democracy, a non-profit organization working to promote democracy, issued a wide survey. She said 82% of Iraqis have concerns about corruption at the highest levels of government, while 83% believe corruption is getting worse .
He continued, “The Harvard Humanitarian Organization surveyed the residents of Mosul and found that they see corruption as the main reason for the emergence of ISIS, because the mechanism by which the Iraqi state operates is based on political quotas, whereby ministerial positions are divided among the winners in each election. These politicians are also given additional influence through which these politicians can appoint people to senior civil service positions .
He explained, “The situation in Iraqi Kurdistan is no less corrupt than what is in the central government. Those families there have influence over politics and the economy, where the Barzani and Talabani families control who gets the contracts and also owns the central bank in their hands. An investigation by the New Republic magazine revealed About the link between Kurdish and American companies, and how these companies used phantom companies to obtain services from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, one of the two main parties in the region and the other is the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and it has a monopoly on selling fuel to the US army, and prices escalated .
And that “this led to a defect in the official institutions, including the police, in bringing any corrupt person with political links to justice. If all this continues, this may lead to instability in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and the Kurds may lose the necessary support for them .
He pointed out, “This has kept successive Iraqi governments ineffective in implementing the two conditions that are considered an indispensable condition for the establishment of a stable state: security and providing people with basic necessities. The United States has failed to achieve its primary goal of achieving stability in Iraq and ultimately in the region, The region was also left unchecked by the United States, as some leaders from powerful families control all important things with almost no accountability, and they still enjoy the support of the United States.
