On Wednesday (May 5, 2021), a prominent member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiath Surji, warned of the "danger" of the expansion of Turkish forces in Iraq, while he saw that Turkey is seeking to control the Kurdistan region, Sinjar, Tal Afar, Mosul and Kirkuk, under the pretext of striking the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) .
In a statement to IQ NEWS , Surji said, "The Turkish forces have begun to occupy large areas, and reinforce their positions and forces in the Kurdistan region, under the pretext of striking the PKK sites," noting that "Turkey is not sincere and aims through these operations to control the region to implement its agendas." .
He added, "If Turkey is sincere in striking Kurdish workers, then it should control its borders and deploy its forces on the borders, instead of establishing military sites inside Iraqi lands," noting that "Turkey seeks to transform the Iraqi Kurdistan region into Libya and Syria and aims to control the areas of Sinjar, Tal Afar and Mosul." Surji warned of "the danger of the Turkish military expansion on Iraq, and the federal government must assume its responsibility towards this danger, expressing his regret for Baghdad's silence towards the Turkish occupation."
During the past two weeks, the northern areas of Dohuk Governorate witnessed violent clashes between the PKK militants and the Turkish forces, after which the latter established two new sites north of Dohuk in less than a week .
On Friday evening (April 23, 2021), the Turkish Ministry of Defense launched the "Lightning Claw" and "Thunderbolt" operations simultaneously in the areas of "Matina, Afshin and Basian", and included targets of the Workers' Party in northern Iraq .
