Shafaq News/ On Monday, the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, called on the European Union to help Iraq develop its economy, recover smuggled funds, and support its plans to confront climate change and protect the environment.
The Media Office of the Presidency of the Republic stated, in a statement received by Shafak News Agency, that Saleh received today in Baghdad the High Representative for Security Policy and Foreign Affairs in the European Union, Josep Borrell, and they discussed joint relations and the importance of strengthening and developing them in various fields.
Salih praised the support provided by the European Union to Iraq during the past years and its existing support in the political, security, humanitarian, economic, service projects and reconstruction.
He stressed "the importance of cooperation on urgent issues, most notably the continuation of the war on terrorism and ensuring that there are no safe havens for it in any region."
Salih urged the European Union to "support the development of the Iraqi economy, help fight corruption and recover looted and smuggled Iraqi funds, and support Iraq in its plans to confront the climate change crisis and protect the environment as a major challenge facing the country, the whole region and the world."
He referred to "Iraq's keenness to strengthen cooperation relations with the European Union in various fields, and to benefit from the European experience," noting the need for cooperation in order to ease the tensions of the region, defuse its crises and establish peace in it, and support the paths of solution and economic and commercial interdependence, and the importance of ensuring the security and stability of Iraq. in order to achieve this.
For his part, Josep Borrell affirmed the European Union's commitment to support and assist Iraq in various fields, and to support its security and stability, praising "the progress made in Iraq and its efforts in internal as well as external issues related to its adoption of a balanced policy that seeks to ease regional tensions."
