    Al-Nour News/Baghdad:
The person in charge of running the affairs of the Ministry of Environment, Jassem Al-Falahi, announced on Sunday that the Supreme Judicial Council will allocate an environmental judge in each governorate, noting that the chemical and nuclear programs of the former regime are one of the causes of environmental pollution. He pointed out that "the Ministry of Environment, under Law No. 27 of 2009 for the Protection and Improvement of the Environment and Ministry Law No. 37 of 2011, was able to restore its full independence after the approval of the Health Insurance Law in paragraph 37, which emphasized the separation of the Ministry of Environment from the Ministry of Health and its return to working with its laws and canceling any decision and order." It contradicts these laws, and the ministry regained its administrative, financial and technical independence in accordance with the decision of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers on 1/8/2021.”

Al-Falahi said in a statement to the newspaper, “Al-Sabah,” that “environmental pollution in Iraq is the result of decades of neglect, wars and terrorist challenges, which had an impact even on the level of environmental infrastructure and on the level of increased pollution rates, whose impact was clearly evident on air, water and soil pollution.”

He stressed that "the environmental pollution file is one of the most important tasks of the Ministry of Environment, especially with the aging infrastructure and what we inherited from the presence of sites contaminated with radioactive pollution as a result of the use of depleted uranium and the presence of other sites from the chemical and nuclear programs of the former regime," noting that "the ministry is working hard through its directorates deployed in All Iraqi governorates, in addition to full coordination with the Environmental Protection and Improvement Authority in the Kurdistan Region, to confront this file.”

Al-Falahi pointed out that “there is important work with international organizations concerned with environmental reality, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other organizations, in addition to the World Bank to face these challenges at the level of capacity-building of our cadres, in addition to To projects and visions to reduce the loads of environmental pollution,” stressing that “the ministry, through its oversight role, seeks to follow up on all polluting activities through the Environmental Improvement Protection Law, through warnings, fines and referral to the judiciary.”

And he indicated that "the biggest challenge facing us is the pollution of water sources, and unfortunately, many state institutions, especially municipal departments in Baghdad and the governorates, dump liquid waste into water sources without treating it, in addition to industrial facilities, power stations and some oil refineries, which all bear the burden." the largest pollution of water sources.

He explained that "there was a prominent role of the Supreme Judiciary in supporting this file and assigning an environmental judge in each governorate to look into environmental crimes and waste, and there is a special interest and follow-up from the President of the Republic in this file."
