Iraq submits a request to an international organization to hold a tripartite meeting with Turkey and Iran on water

On Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture Muhammad al-Khafaji announced that he had submitted a request to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations “FAO” to sponsor a joint tripartite meeting between Baghdad, Ankara and Tehran to discuss the distribution of water quotas among those countries.
The minister said in a press conference held today and attended by a reporter, that "holding the regional conference for the Near East is important and is considered a great achievement for Iraq, the Ministry of Agriculture and the FAO."
He added that "the conference was attended by many ministers from more than 30 countries, in attendance and virtually," adding that "many paragraphs were discussed regarding changing ports and food security."
The minister also indicated that a request was submitted to the "FAO" organization to hold a tripartite meeting between Iraq, Turkey and Iran to discuss water problems.
The work of the thirty-sixth regional conference for the Near East and North Africa, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), under the title “Recovery and Resuming Employment”, was launched on Monday morning in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, to discuss the challenges faced by the countries of the Middle East and North Africa at the level of agriculture and water .
It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers from water scarcity as a result of lack of rain and low water revenues in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which affected the agricultural plan for the current season, which shrank to 50% from what it was during the last season.
The General Authority for Groundwater of the Ministry of Water Resources announced last January that it had completed drilling about 600 water wells in 2021 to confront the water scarcity in Iraq.
