Shafaq News/ On Thursday, a Kurdish politician called on the Kurdish forces in Kirkuk governorate to unify their positions to restore the governor's position and confront "organized Arabization processes", denying at the same time the existence of "negative repercussions" of the presidential crisis between the two main Kurdish parties on the governor's position and the Kurdish constants in Governorate.
A member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and former MP Jamal Muhammad Shakour told Shafaq News Agency, "The position of governor of Kirkuk is a purely Kurdish entitlement, whether for the Patriotic Union or the Kurdistan Democratic Party, but the circumstances of 2017 and the events that accompanied it disrupted the role of the provincial council at that time, and it was impossible for members of the Kurdish Council to attend to install a new governor."
He stressed "the need to unify positions between the two Kurdish parties to restore the governor's position and stop the Arabization of Kirkuk," blaming the federal government "the responsibility of robbing the Kurds in Kirkuk because of the reluctance of its procedures and the weakness of its role regarding what is happening in the province."
The Kurdish politician warned of "the exacerbation of Kirkuk's national and political problems since 2017 until now, most notably the problems of land, administrative and security positions, and organized marginalization processes without any solutions or government interventions to do justice to the Kurds."
In a related context, Shakur denied "the existence of any negative repercussions for the presidency of the republic between the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union on the entitlements of the Kurds in Kirkuk, most notably the position of the governor," noting that "the presidential negotiations are a far cry from the common Kurdish entitlements and constants in Kirkuk."
Kirkuk is a disputed province between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region, and the Kurds in the province have complained that they have been subjected to "widespread marginalization" since 2017, when the federal government forces and the Popular Mobilization forces invaded the province and the Peshmerga withdrew from it for fear of a conflict erupting between them in the wake of the unprecedented tension between the two sides after a referendum independence.
The Kurds in Kirkuk say that a systematic policy has taken place during the last two years to remove them from high-ranking government positions and others.
