A prominent Kurdish official from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced, on Sunday, that an agreement had been reached with the Baghdad government to return about 30,000 Iraqi refugees to their country from Syrian camps, provided that those wishing to return would be gradually evacuated, under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. To a special camp located in Iraqi territory, including a number of families who went to the area before 2011.
The official revealed that the Iraqi delegation included a number of officials from the Ministry of Interior and the security services, and held meetings with the Autonomous Administration authorities in Qamishli and discussed ways and ways to return these refugees to Phase. The visiting delegation also held meetings with the General Command of the "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF), and discussed the file of Iraqi prisoners accused of belonging to ISIS and committing terrorist crimes on Syrian soil.
These meetings were supervised and coordinated with the Operations Room of the General Command of the International Coalition, to return them to Iraq and prosecute them before a national Iraqi court. The Iraqi delegation arrived in the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria, last Friday, amid strict security measures, away from the cameras’ lenses and the presence of journalists, taken by the administration of al-Hol camp in coordination with the Iraqi side.
The Kurdish official stated, "The delegation visited the camps (Al-Hol) and (Roj) and other camps, and it was agreed to return and evacuate 25,000 refugees, and every Iraqi wants to return voluntarily to his country and took the initiative to register his name, starting from next month, after about less than a month. On the transfer of a batch of Iraqi refugees to Iraqi territory, through the Yarubiyah - Rabia border crossing. The official explained that the work mechanism is done by registering name lists, taking hand and eye prints, and all personal information and data, after Baghdad announced the construction of a number of reception and rehabilitation centers, near the city of Mosul in the northeast of the country.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the camp administration are facing the problem of many of these Iraqis not having Iraqi identity papers and identities, in addition to the birth of many children on Syrian lands who do not have any personal identification documents. Many queued in front of the registration office, in the presence of the Iraqi delegation, to register their data, and expressed their desire to return to their homeland, as a result of the improvement in security conditions there, and because of the deteriorating living conditions, especially inside the camps.
The Syrian camps, most notably "Al-Hol" and "Roj" camps, contain thousands of Iraqi families. The Kurdish official explained that the number of Iraqi families is more than 8,000, “as for the number of Iraqi prisoners suspected and accused of fighting with ISIS, it is estimated at 4,000. This file was discussed by a prominent American delegation, which visited the region a few days ago, with the leaders of the (SDF) and the Autonomous Administration.
On the 10th of last month, the Iraqi government and the Autonomous Administration authorities evacuated about 120 Iraqi families, consisting of 490 people. Last February, Iraq deported a small part of the Iraqi refugees in the al-Hol camp, about 114 families, at a time when Baghdad repatriated one hundred families, during the month of September last year, while they deported in May 2021 towards 381 Iraqi refugees, who make up 95 families, to a camp in Nineveh Governorate, inside Iraqi territory. Al-Hol includes more than 55,000 people, including approximately 25,000 Iraqis, who make up 8,000 families.
In a related context, it was revealed yesterday, that a high-ranking US State Department delegation visited the city of Qamishli, on the 14th of this month, and it included Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Ethan Goldrich, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq Affairs, Jennifer Gavito, and director of the file Syria and Iraq in the National Security Council, Zahra Bell, and the US State Department's representative in northeastern Syria, Matthew Pearl.
The delegation held meetings with both the leaders of the SDF and the SDF Council, and sources participating in the meeting said that the two sides discussed the latest developments related to combating sleeper cells loyal to ISIS, after the recent attack on the industrial prison in the city of Hasaka, and considered that these active groups They still pose a threat to the region, and they also discussed the file of Iraqi refugees and prisoners accused of fighting alongside the organization, and ways to enhance cooperation, support development and stability operations to establish security and safety, which prevents the attempts of these cells to organize their ranks to revive the organization again.
