    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

The Ministry of Agriculture still reveals from time to time the extent of its “dissatisfaction” with the government’s decision to open the import of all goods prohibited from import, with the aim of reducing prices in the market.
Since the Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Al-Khafaji, announced that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi was “dismayed” with him, due to his disapproval of the decision to open import, the ministry continues to reveal the “uselessness” of the decision to open import and its failure to reduce prices, especially since the price hike did not come due to “lack of supply.” Of the Iraqi local products, especially fish and eggs, but the production is sufficient to cover the entire local consumption.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture said, "The process of allowing the import of fish did not prevent it from increasing its prices locally," noting that "the rise in global prices after Covid-19 affected in one way or another the rise in the prices of materials locally, and that dollar prices and the month of Ramadan are other factors in Raising the prices of agricultural materials and crops.
He pointed out that "all agricultural inputs have no subsidy, as is the case for fish," adding that "the prices of agricultural crops materials, in addition to local fish, are better and are still cheaper than the prices of neighboring countries."
He pointed out that "the process of importing fish is not the responsibility of the ministry, and the Council of Ministers is responsible for that," expecting that "prices will decrease and calm down after Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr."
In recent weeks, fish prices have nearly doubled, from 4.5 thousand dinars to more than 9,000 Iraqi dinars.

On the 17th of last April, about 20 days ago, the Ministry of Agriculture also confirmed that the decision to open imports did not lead to a drop in food prices.
The ministry’s spokesman, Hamid Al-Nayef, said in a statement that “the rise in food prices is not exclusive to Iraq, but is present in neighboring countries, and therefore the imported materials to Iraq have also doubled their prices, and therefore the decision to open imports did not solve the problem of the high prices of various commodities and products. “.
He pointed out that "the solution lies in adopting a number of treatments internally, the most important of which is providing feed to livestock breeders of livestock, poultry and fish, and imposing strict control on local markets to control prices in them, while taking legal measures against anyone who raises prices on citizens."

The decision of the Council of Ministers to open the import of all materials prohibited from import met with angry reactions, especially from the owners of poultry projects, as Iraq’s production of eggs is sufficient to meet the local need by 100%, while the government was accused of taking the decision against local projects.
