The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee announced, on Sunday, that the Military Service Law will be approved during the current session.
Committee member Waad Al-Qaddo said in a statement to the official newspaper (today, May 29, 2022): “The committee’s first meeting witnessed an extensive discussion regarding the issue of important laws that must be worked on during the next stage and submitted to the Legal Committee, then put it on the agenda. The House of Representatives, most notably the “service of science”.
Al-Qaddo believes that “the importance of the law lies in the reunification of Iraqis and the unification of their ranks and the inclusion of generations in this institution in order for them to have an affiliation with the flag and the homeland,” noting that “the law will increase the conscious youth who bear their responsibility towards the country, as well as it will work to alleviate the suffering on their shoulders.” Young people, and deals with graduates and graduate degrees, and many other topics.”
The deputy continued by saying that the committee “will hold intensive meetings in the coming days, and there is insistence, solidarity and unified visions among the members to submit it to the Legal Committee and the Presidency of the House of Representatives to present it to the members of the House and vote on it,” noting that “the most important paragraphs are securing logistical issues and providing training centers and funds.” The necessary conditions that can provide all these requirements, especially as the country is experiencing an economic recovery due to the high oil prices.”
He stated that "all these requirements can be achieved within a period not exceeding a year and a half from the adoption of the law."
And regarding the commitment of those covered by the law, he said: “The citizen has rights and duties, one of which is the defense of Iraq’s land, sky, water and people, which makes us organize a set of penalties against those who are not obligated to join military service in accordance with this law, which will see the light during the current session.”
