To confront the threat of famine, the "OPEC" fund allocates one billion dollars for global food security

Shafaq News/ The "OPEC" Fund for International Development has allocated one billion US dollars of its resources over the next three years to its new plan called "Food Security Action Plan".

The approved funds will be provided in the form of immediate assistance to cover the costs of importing basic commodities, such as seeds, grains and fertilizers, with medium and long-term support for the security of food supplies in partner countries.

The Director General of the OPEC Fund, Abdul Hamid Al Khalifa, said: “Millions of the most vulnerable people may face the risk of starvation in the coming months unless the international community moves quickly and effectively to address the global food crisis. The dynamic model of the OPEC Fund has enabled us to allocate one billion US dollars from our program investment to ensure food security wherever and however it is most needed.”

The new facility will channel loans to the public and private sectors, as well as grants to developing countries badly affected by the fallout from the war in Ukraine, which has driven up food and fertilizer prices around the world. In addition to providing immediate relief, the OPEC Fund's Food Security Action Plan is geared towards building resilience and sustainability of partner countries' agriculture sectors and strengthening regional food value chains to protect against future global shocks.

The OPEC Fund, since its inception in 1976, has allocated $2.6 billion to agricultural projects, representing more than 10 percent of its total operations, in support of SDG 2 "Zero Hunger." The OPEC Fund specifically targeted investments in rural infrastructure, development of production and storage facilities, trade in agricultural commodities, as well as training, capacity building and institutions.

In an effort to galvanize partners and catalyze action to achieve global sustainable development goals despite the recent shocks to the international system, the Forum of the First OPEC Fund for Development will be held in Vienna, Austria on June 21, 2022. Focusing on the topics of climate, energy and food security, the forum will bring together government leaders and heads of institutions and expert practitioners from the public and private sectors to exchange views on the current state of international development, along with expected future scenarios. Under the title “Leading Resilience and Equity,” the high-level forum will highlight important questions, including how to strike the right balance between climate action and access to basic energy; how innovations in finance and technology can support inclusive development and growth on a larger scale; What are the requirements to translate common aspirations into impact on the ground?

More details on the Food Security Action Plan will be announced during the OPEC Fund for Development Forum on June 21, 2022.
