Parliament distances itself from differences and refuses to set a date for electing the president of Iraq without an agreement
Shafaq News/ Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Shakhwan Abdullah, said on Tuesday that the parliament is distancing itself from political conflicts and disagreements, and is keen to expedite the formation of the government and not set a date for electing the president of the republic unless it is preceded by a political agreement outside the parliament.
Abdullah said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that the meeting of the presidency of the Council, which was held yesterday in the Constitutional Hall with heads and representatives of political blocs, was aimed at resuming the work and activities of the Council after the legislative recess, completing the number of committee members with new representatives, agreeing on the agenda and incorporating laws.
He stressed that the Council will not be a party to the differences and problems, as long as some political forces fail to agree on a national figure for the prime minister capable of leading the country in the current situation and this difficult stage, noting that there are unfortunately those who are trying to plunge the legislative institution into the crisis and throw the ball in its yard. , And what happened from the blockage and previous data and the difference in the positions of the parties complicated the political scene.
Abdullah also pointed out that “the House of Representatives distances itself from political conflicts and disputes, and is keen to expedite the formation of the government and not set a date for electing the President of the Republic unless it is preceded by a political agreement outside the House, and to complete the constitutional entitlements, and the House has major duties and tasks related to important legislation and laws that affect the life of citizens and provide basic services.
The Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives called "the national forces and the parties to the political process to the necessity of continuing dialogues and understandings and agreeing to choose and nominate personalities for the prime ministers and the republic, so that the parliament can play its role and proceed with legal procedures in accordance with the constitution and the rules of procedure and determine the session for the election of the president of the republic and assign the candidate of the largest bloc."
He stressed that "the House of Representatives does not prefer holding sessions to elect the president of the republic and assign a personality to the prime minister unless preceded by a political agreement outside the parliament, because this will lead to complexity and more disagreements," explaining that "the House of Representatives will not be an arena for deepening differences and seeks to unify the visions of political forces." And he will work to perform his legislative and oversight duties and continue his daily work with the beginning of the new legislative term.
Yesterday, Monday, the Presidency of the House of Representatives held a meeting with the heads of the parliamentary blocs, without reaching an agreement on setting a date for the session to elect the President of the Republic.
The meeting discussed the inclusion of some laws originally found in the corridors of the House of Representatives, and sent by the Council of Ministers, and their inclusion in the agendas of the upcoming sessions, as well as addressing the empowerment of the opposition within the parliamentary committees, whether in the presidencies of the committees or the first deputy.

According to the political custom followed throughout the previous sessions, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the position of President of the Republic since the overthrow of the previous regime in 2003.
But in terms of numbers, the fact that the Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the recent legislative elections, compared to only 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, may reverse the equation this time.
The Democratic Party says that the Union nominated Saleh for the position without the consent of the rest of the Kurdish forces, which prompted him to put forward a candidate from his side to fill the position.
