Electricity intends to reach 25 thousand megawatts: new stations will enter service

Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
The Ministry of Electricity stated its intention to reach a production of 25,000 megawatts in the coming days, and talked about the imminent entry of a number of stations into service, one of which has a capacity of 650 megawatts, within two weeks, while stressing that the electronic collection project is still before the Council of Ministers, stressing that its implementation It will not cost the citizen anything, indicating that the executing company will install the meters, with the cost price remaining the same, subsidized by 92%.
Electricity is the most prominent service problem in Iraq, and it is the reason for most of the popular demonstrations taking place in all governorates, especially during the summer. The system has not seen stability for years, despite spending $81 billion on this sector over the past years.
The ministry’s spokesman, Ahmed Moussa, said, “The electric production will reach 25,000 megawatts in the coming days. There are new generating capacities that will enter the work, with the continuation of periodic maintenance of the stations, the installation of nutrients and other future projects related to solar energy, as well as the connection with neighboring countries.” .
Moussa added, "The new energies include the second unit in Salah al-Din Governorate, in the middle of next month, with a capacity of 650 megawatts, a crutch station, and other units."
He pointed out, "The ministry is concerned with increasing energy, production volume, transmission lines, and the rehabilitation sector, and is currently working completely without budgets."
Moussa pointed out, "The five-year plan concerned with the electricity file is in the drawers of the Council of Ministers, and it has won its approval, and against moving forward with the short plan, which included adding 7,000 megawatts within a year, we were able to add 3,000 megawatts."
He stressed, "The current production has reached nearly 23 thousand megawatts, and there is great stability in the loads, the system, and the hours of electricity supply, and there is a clear approval by the citizen of the service provided to him compared to previous years."
Moussa explained, "The long cuts that take place are the result of technical symptoms that are being addressed directly by our technical staff who work around the clock in order to provide the best service to the Iraqi citizen."
He noted, "The application of electronic collection will not affect the income of citizens, and the project will be provided with the same government support, which is 92%, and therefore will not leave negative economic effects, but on the contrary, the system will witness an increase in processing hours." Moussa continues, "The installation of meters is an investment project sponsored by the ministry and the party to which the contracts are referred, and the citizen will not pay any fees for installing the electronic meter in his home."
He cautioned, that "the issue is still a study in the Council of Ministers and has not turned into a decision taken, and no contracts have been concluded in this regard until the present time."
Moussa added, "The doors of the ministry are open to all oversight and parliamentary authorities to see our work, know the levels of achievement, and hold those responsible for any defects accountable." The Ministry of Electricity had promised the Iraqis earlier that this summer will witness better electricity supply than previous years, but the regulatory authorities questioned these statements, indicating that the situation of the electrical system is still deteriorating and no remarkable achievement has been achieved until the present time. For his part, a member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, Adnan Al-Jabri, stated that "Iraq is witnessing an annual increase in the volume of demand for electric energy by about 1,000 megawatts, which is the result of the population increase."
Al-Jabri added, "The Iraqi government has to diversify energy sources, for two reasons, the first is to achieve self-sufficiency, and the second reason is to meet the growing need annually."
He pointed out that "electricity interconnection projects with neighboring countries will not generate important and influential energies for us," calling on the government to "establish new generating stations at home with high capacities that meet the level of need."
Al-Jabri went on to "the need for the government to proceed at the same time with the projects of preparing the fuel plan for electricity in order to operate the national stations with their full capacities." Iraq relies for a third of its electricity production on gas supplied to the Iranian side, and it was recently paid more than 1.6 billion dollars in dues for the year 2020.
The scourge of corruption that afflicts state institutions is one of the reasons for the continuation of the energy crisis, in addition to the networks’ exposure to actual problems outside the control of the state, including the low levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the suspension of some power stations in dams, and terrorist operations against electricity transmission towers from time to time. In addition to the continuing increasing demand for the current at an annual rate of about two thousand megawatts.
