Iranian Foreign Ministry: We avoid interfering in Iraqi affairs and follow developments

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani stressed, on Monday, that his country avoids interfering in Iraqi affairs and is closely following its political transformations, calling for laying the foundations for peace and stability in Iraq.
Kanaani said in his weekly press conference that "Iraq's issues are important because it is a neighboring country and we are closely following its political changes," calling for "establishing the foundations of peace and stability in Iraq."
He added, "Our contacts with the Iraqi authorities are continuing," adding that "Iran avoids interfering in Iraqi affairs."
Kanaani called for "the formation of an inclusive government that stands by the Iraqi people," expressing his hope that "Iranian-Iraqi relations will become stronger than before."
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman urged the Iraqi political forces to "adhere to the country's general constitution."
Regarding the nuclear agreement, Kanaani stressed that “we are in an advanced stage of negotiations and reaching an agreement related to achieving our demands,” noting that “there is a relative development in the negotiations, but it does not achieve all of our demands, pending the lifting of sanctions.”
He explained that "if Iran's demands are respected, we could witness the signing of the agreement soon."
Kanaani went on to say, "There is ground for reaching an agreement, provided that Iran's red lines are respected."
Yesterday, the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces announced that its chief, Major General Muhammad Bagheri, would visit Iraq in the coming days.
The Iranian Mehr news agency said, "The Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, met on Sunday morning with the President of the Iraqi National Defense University, Lieutenant-General Muzher Mohsen Al-Alaq at the headquarters of the General Staff of the Armed Forces."
"We have many religious commonalities with the Iraqi people. On the other hand, both countries have special capabilities in terms of geographical location, which makes the interaction between the two countries expand," the Iranian agency quoted Zadeh as saying.
He added, "The Iranian president has made developing cooperation with Iran's neighbors a priority of his foreign policy and Iraq is one of these countries, so in this area, the Defense League in Iran and Iraq will have good interactions with each other." Accordingly, we in the General Staff will seriously try to develop these relations.”
Zadeh added that "the Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Baqeri, will visit Iraq to develop cooperation between the two countries in the coming days."
The Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces said, "The unity and brotherhood between the two countries can create a rising power in the region that is achieved through the exchange of ideas at all levels."
It is noteworthy that the Secretary of the Supreme Council for Public Culture in Iran, Sayed Majid Emami, had called for the provision of appropriate conditions in the Iranian city of Ilam with the aim of signing twinning agreements between it and the Iraqi cities with a Faili Kurdish majority; This is due to the cultural and linguistic commonalities that bring them together.
Emami said in a statement yesterday, "The conclusion of twinning agreements between Iranian border cities that share cultural, ideological and linguistic commonalities (with their counterparts in neighboring countries) is part of the decisions of the country's Supreme National Security Council."
He continued, "The twinning agreements play an active role in expanding cultural relations, and are the gateway to introducing Iran's culture abroad."
