US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jennifer Gavito confirmed that the United States is very concerned about the Turkish and Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region, and hopes that an Iraqi government will be formed that will maintain good relations with the countries of the region.
Jennifer Gavito told a symposium of the Atlantic Council, held in Washington, DC, on Tuesday (October 25, 2022), that "the recent Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region are very worrying, as the use of drones and ballistic missiles has caused civilian casualties and deaths." In order to aggravate the situation further, the leaders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards threatened to launch more attacks in the future, and as it is known, they aim to divert attention from the hideous repression they are exercising against” the Iranians.
Gavito was referring to the attacks launched by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on (September 28, 2022), using dozens of missiles and drones, against the headquarters of Iranian Kurdistan parties in the Kurdistan Region, which killed 18 people and wounded more than 60 others.
These attacks coincided with the demonstrations that erupted in Iran and Iranian Kurdistan to protest the death of the Kurdish young woman, Mahsa (Vina) Amini, after she was arrested by the Guidance Police in Tehran, whose father said that she was killed by Iranian security forces.
Turkey and coordination with Iraq
The official in the administration of President Joe Biden spoke in her speech about the Turkish military operations inside the territory of the Kurdistan Region, saying: “We expressed our concern about the Turkish operations in the Kurdistan Region, and we called on the Turkish government to coordinate closely with the Iraqi government, regarding its operations targeting sites Terrorists across the border. Not only is Iran the aggressive party that threatens international stability, but Russia has also started a fierce and unjustified war against Ukraine.”
It is noteworthy that, during the past three decades, Turkey has carried out dozens of military operations against the PKK sites in the Kurdistan Region, the latest of which was Operation Claw - Al-Laqif, which began on April 18, 2022.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that the operation resulted in the killing of 423 party members and 62 Turkish soldiers, while the Popular Defense Forces (the armed wing of the Kurdistan Workers Party) announced the killing of 2,124 Turkish soldiers and 144 party members.
Attacks by factions close to Iran
The US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, touched on the political process in Iraq and the attacks of the factions close to Iran, noting that the United States urges the next government in Iraq to "continue the efforts made by the government that preceded it to integrate Iraq with the region, which would lead to It aims to develop the Iraqi economy, improve its environment, and contribute to facilitating joint work, and I believe that this interdependence will be the basis for long-term peace.”
Regarding Washington’s position on relations between Tehran and Baghdad, Jennifer Gavito confirmed that “the US administration would like to de-escalate the situation with Iran, and it is aware that Iran is a very important partner for Iraq, and the two countries have wide borders and many common interests, and we believe that Iraq and Iran should have positive relations.” , But it must be positive on both sides,” noting that the constant threats and attacks from the pro-Iranian armed factions “constitute a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, and weaken the citizens’ trust in the government.”
And it considered that these factions “cannot claim to be part of the security forces, and at the same time operate outside the authority and orders of the government.”
On the relations between Tehran, Washington and its allies in the region and the world, Jennifer Gavito said that “President Biden is committed to working with allies and partners to prevent and confront Iran’s sabotage acts, and Iran’s attacks on American forces in Iraq or anywhere else in the region are unacceptable, and when citizens and our interests are exposed. To attacks, we will have our response, and in parallel, we will continue to support the Iranians in order to obtain their rights and dignity, which the Tehran regime has denied them for a long time.”
