Today, Monday, the Ministry of Planning revealed official statistics on the number of residents and the percentages of workers in the public and private sectors, while identifying the governorates with the highest rate of unemployment.
The ministry's spokesman, Abd al-Zahra al-Hindawi, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The population of Iraq, as of the end of 2021, according to estimates, exceeded 41 million," expecting that "the population for the year 2022 will reach (42) million."
He added, "Until the year 2030, the population will reach, according to our expectations, 50 million people," noting that "these expectations come at a time when there is no general population census."
He continued, "The economically active population aged 15 years and over represents 64 percent, and this gives an image that the society is young," explaining that "out of this percentage, 50.3 are males, and 49.7 are females."
And he indicated that "the category of young people between the ages of 15-24 years constitutes 21 percent, while those aged 25 and over constitute 43 percent of the total population in Iraq," pointing out that "the estimates of the economically active labor force amount to approximately 43.5 percent, and they are more than 10 millions of people,” explaining that “the participation of women in the labor force does not exceed 11 percent, compared to 68 percent of males.”
He stated, "The number of workers is 9 million people, who constitute 84 percent of the total workforce," pointing out that "the percentage of employment to the population reaches 33 percent, i.e. a third of the population is of working age."
At the level of branches of economic activity, Al-Hindawi confirmed that “the three highest activities are: building and construction at 16.3 percent, public administration and defense at 16 percent, and wholesale and retail trade at 14 percent,” explaining that “73 percent of women tend to work in Services activity, while males dominate four professions, which are construction, services, protection, and car and truck drivers, but women, on the other hand, dominate education in its various stages and the clothing industry.
Al-Hindawi stressed that "the percentage of workers in the government sector is 38 percent, compared to 62 percent, who work in the private sector in all its details," pointing out that "there are 9 percent of the total youth employment working in jobs below their skill level, and there are 37 Percent of young people are uneducated, employed or trained.
Regarding the unemployment rate, he stated that "the unemployment rate in Iraq for the year 2021 reached 16.5 percent, which is higher than it was before 2020, and among young people from 15 to 24 years old, it reached 36 percent. As for ages over 25 years, it is low, unemployment among them is 11 percent. There is long-term unemployment, and those looking for work constitute 5 percent," adding that "the population outside the labor force constitutes 60.5 percent of the total individuals aged 15 years and over, with a rate of 16 million people who are outside the labor force out of the total number of individuals."
And he stressed that "the provinces with the largest rate of unemployment are Nineveh with a rate of 33 percent, followed by Muthanna with a rate of 27 percent, then Dhi Qar with a rate of 26 percent and Basra with a rate of 22 percent."
