    Baghdad - people
The delegation, which is considered the first of its kind to visit Washington since Muhammed Shiaa al-Sudani took over as prime minister in Iraq, at the end of last October, will bring several demands to the Americans, according to what an official source in the Iraqi prime minister's office told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The source said in a statement to the Qatari-funded newspaper, followed by "Nass" (February 8, 2023), that "these demands relate first to Washington's easing of the procedures for providing Iraq with hard currency (dollars), which it restricted in the past two months to more than 70 percent, and for Iraq to obtain new exemptions." Related to dealings with Iran and Russia, most of which are related to the energy field.

He added, "The Iraqi delegation will ask to postpone work on the electronic platform for a few months, until merchants as well as Iraqi banks get used to it, with guarantees that procedures will be put in place by the Central Bank of Iraq to prevent currency smuggling abroad, and its arrival to countries that have US economic sanctions."

The source added, "The visit of the Iraqi delegation will determine the return of the Iraqi dinar to its previous value, or its exposure to a possible new collapse."

According to the source, "the delegation hopes to achieve a good result in this visit, but the Americans have conditions and demands related to controlling the smuggling of dollars to three parties, which are Iran, the Syrian regime, and the Lebanese Hezbollah."

The electronic platform for selling dollars imposed by the United States on Iraq is summed up in Washington’s monitoring of the entities that obtain dollars, the reason for obtaining them, and the nature of their activities, in addition to requiring the Central Bank of Iraq to make transfers (payment) to the parties from which merchants and various Iraqi companies buy, without the merchant getting or the company for the amount in cash.

The platform allows the United States to monitor the amounts that come out of the central bank, as well as identifying the beneficiaries from banks, companies and businessmen. Previously, the Central Bank of Iraq sold dollars through a direct sale window to private banks and companies at a value of 1460 dinars per dollar, and the selling window witnessed an average of 170 million dollars per day.

No change in the status of US forces in Iraq
Regarding the visit of the Iraqi delegation, another Iraqi official told the newspaper, who asked not to be named, that the Sudanese government decided not to open the file of the American military presence during this visit, and is currently focusing on the issue of the Iraqi dinar crisis.

He added, in a brief phone call: “The delegation will confirm the continuation of military and security cooperation with the United States, and there will be no change from the status quo since the government of Mustafa Al-Kazemi, and this decision is with the knowledge of the Coordination Framework Coalition, which was briefed on Iraq’s position and the seriousness of the current dollar crisis on the economy, so the issue of Ending the US military presence and everything related to it is not on the table.

For his part, Moein Al-Kazemi, a member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, MP for the "Coordination Framework", said, "The visit of the Iraqi delegation to Washington is very important and comes in order to solve the problem of the American emphasis on dealing in dollars."

And he considered that "this tightening caused a crisis in the exchange rate of the dollar, which led to its significant increase, which led to an increase in the prices of foodstuffs and others in the Iraqi market."
