Yesterday, Sunday, the Ministry of Commerce threatened violating food agents and monopolists with deterrent legal measures.
The ministry stated, in a statement received by (Al-Mada), that “the supervisory teams affiliated with the ministry, which represent the departments and companies of the ministry, have launched a large control campaign in conjunction with the preparation of a new meal from the items of the food basket.”
The statement added, "The ministry's plan is in place to audit and control the work of food agents, as well as checking food prices through mobile teams that check food prices and prevent monopoly."
He pointed out, "The ministry has prepared legal procedures against the violating agents, as well as coordinating with the security services, the National Security Agency, and the Organized Crime Department to take the necessary measures against monopolists in the local markets."
The statement pointed out that “the campaign aims to check the mechanisms for preparing the items of the food basket and reaching those who deserve it by expediting their processing through a foodstuff agent, as well as the quality and location of the agency in which foodstuffs are used. ".
And he talked about, “The mechanisms for controlling agents and the local markets continue, and that they will witness a remarkable development in the coming days.”
The statement stressed, "This is in order to ensure the safety of delivering the items of the food basket to citizens and those covered by social care."
And he stated, "Tightening the control mechanisms over the local markets by examining the markets to prevent monopoly and speculation and contribute to creating a line parallel to those markets through the commercial plan that the ministry carried out in implementation of the directives of the Council of Ministers."
And the statement continued, "The oversight plan includes the Karkh and Rusafa districts in Baghdad through mobile teams, as well as the plan that included all governorates, which extends to districts and districts, and in the form of stages."
He explained, "The first stage includes city centers, then the duties of these teams branch out in all districts and sub-districts."
And the statement stated, "The aim of this campaign is to see in detail the mechanisms for preparing the food basket materials, and also to see in detail the prices of foodstuffs in the most remote region of Iraq." And the statement went on, that "the ministry has the ability to reach all markets and agents on the homeland, as a result of the presence of infrastructure and personnel capable of reaching these areas."
And the ministry stated in another statement, “The General Company for Grain Trade announced that its sites will continue to receive and unload trucks loaded with wheat coming to the country through the port of Umm Qasr to secure more quantities for the account of the ration card items for the next stage.”
And the statement continued, "The technical and administrative staff working in the sites of Dohuk, Sulaymaniyah, Salah al-Din, Nineveh, Diyala, Najaf, Dhi Qar, Basra and Wasit continued their work until late hours at night to expedite the unloading of truckloads loaded with imported wheat and return them to the loading site in the port of Umm Qasr."
And he pointed out that “the southern berths in the port of Umm Qasr witnessed the docking of two ships at the same time, as berth No. 3 witnessed the berthing of the ship (THEODOREJR), loaded with an amount of 52,500 thousand tons of American wheat, while the marine berth No. 4 witnessed the docking of the ship (DOMINATOR) and loaded with a quantity of 44,000 thousand.” Tons of Australian wheat to enhance the governorates’ stockpile of wheat for future benefits.
In addition, a member of the House of Representatives, Omid Muhammad, confirmed the parliament's ability to take measures that contribute to reducing food prices, which are witnessing a rise in recent times. Muhammad said, in statements received by local media and followed by (Al-Mada), that “the role of Parliament is to monitor and legislate, so it is able to take a role in fixing food prices in the market, which is witnessing a rise, which negatively affected the poor classes of society.”
And Muhammad added, “The House of Representatives must summon the relevant ministries to find out the reasons for the high prices and develop urgent solutions to this matter.”
He called on "the government to support the local product, especially flour, which is considered the basic material for the Iraqi family, with the aim of limiting the rise in its prices in the markets."
It is noteworthy that the local markets are still witnessing a rise in prices despite the relative decline in the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar, while observers attributed this situation to weak oversight
