Today, Friday, the General Authority for Irrigation and Reclamation Projects of the Ministry of Water Resources confirmed that Iraq suffers from a large storage vacuum as a result of the drought it was exposed to during the past three years, while it indicated that the ministry deals according to 3 scenarios with water flows from the upstream countries Turkey and Syria after the earthquake or as a result of other circumstances.
The Director General of the Authority, Khaled Shamal, said in a press statement, "The country went through three consecutive dry years 2020, 2021 and 2022, which left a large reservoir void in natural lakes, including Tharthar, Habbaniyah, Razzaza, and others, in addition to another void in storage lakes represented by the Mosul and Haditha dams and other dams." That "the storage vacuum caused a decrease in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and the tributaries, rivers and channels associated with the two rivers."
He pointed out that "Iraq is able to deal with 3 scenarios related to the revenues coming from Turkey and Syria after the major earthquake that struck the two countries. In Syria, benefiting from those water revenues by storing them in the Haditha Dam and pushing the water through the irrigation channel to Lake Tharthar and Lake Habbaniyah, and working to feed the Tigris River,” noting that “this scenario will enhance the raising of levels in the Euphrates River and its associated rivers, as well as feeding the marshes.” Increasing the areas that can be revived and fed to Lake Al-Razzazah, Hawr Ibn Najm Lake and Bahr Al-Najaf.
And he continued, "The second scenario is that there may be minor or light damage to the dams, and Turkey or Syria begins to push large water releases towards Iraq via the Euphrates River, and takes the same steps in the first scenario, or the third and final scenario is the possibility of rain and the melting of many snows that result in torrential rains." And high expenses that can be used to store them in the storage space that Iraq possesses.
He stressed that "the Ministry of Water Resources can absorb any quantities of water that may come to Iraq from Syria, Iran or Turkey during the coming period."
