The Electricity and Energy Committee in the House of Representatives revealed the Ministry of Electricity's intention to resort to Chinese technology in collection by contracting with a Chinese company to install smart meters.
Committee member Hussein al-Battat told "Al-Sabah": "The electric energy that reaches the citizen today is like free or without a bill, and electricity cannot be controlled and provided to everyone unless smart meters are available, taking into account the poverty rate in Iraq and the needy families." He called for the necessity of having a "clear bill based on the real expenditure of each family."
Al-Battat considered Iraq "the only country in the world to provide electric energy free of charge to citizens," noting that "the current production of energy in the event of the availability of smart meters will force families to rationalize consumption, which contributes to providing it to all regions of Iraq completely."
He continued, "There are many issues that lead to wasting electrical energy, such as slums, and the absence of energy meters in many areas, especially the new ones, which has led to a weakness in controlling electrical energy."
A member of the Electricity Committee explained that "the privatization experiment succeeded in some neighborhoods of Baghdad, so that it forced homes to take enough energy, and this means that the experiment must be generalized to the rest of the regions by giving each house 15-20 amperes at a symbolic price," pointing out that "the ministry We are in the process of contracting with a Chinese company that is the first in the world in the field of smart meters, and has previously installed 500 million meters in many countries of the world.
